This page is intended as an overview of the development of various versions.
I got the idea for R3R on January 19, 2003 and version 0.1 was released on the 21st. Then after more than a month of development, R3R 1.0 was released on March 3, 2003. Its goal was to be the first usable version, but is no longer being maintained.
Version 1.0 has a couple of problems, including HTTP violations and difficult installation.
After 1.0 was released, 1.1 was started immediately. Its goal was to build onto 1.0 to not only be usable, but also a nice tool to use.
1.1.6 was released on October 9, 2003 and is the final version in the 1.1.x series. It is no longer being maintained.
R3R 1.2 was released on February 1, 2004. The last version of the 1.2 series is 1.2.5, released 2009-12-22.
After five years of sporadic development, R3R 2.0 (released 2010-01-09) has the following features:
This is the current seriee version of R3R. Only security updates can be expected.
This series is meant to contain the features and bug and stability fixes for 2.4. These are currently the most up-to-date, but stability isn't a major goal.
This release is going to take away the unmaintained code, making it slimmer and more stable. It will be the next stable series.
The only justification I can see for doing this is to backport some of the important updates from 3.0.
3.0 is going to focus on a major paradigm shift. It's going to sporadically pull new feed items from servers and save them in some sort of file (SQLite, perhaps). The client (tui, wx, or whatever) will read from this file and mark the items as read or unread, like in a conventional mail/news client. The UIs, though, will remain largely unchanged (but users should notice the speed increases of the latest stories always being available).
